Tonight a showcase of some of Leeds’ finest Indie talent was promised, and in my first encounter with The Elbow Rooms, I was pleasantly surprised with its tiered design and thriving atmosphere. Tiny Giants kicked off the evening’s proceedings with a cocktail of Indie music influenced by the likes of The Stone Roses and Kasabian. The trio clearly have the ability to pen a good hook or two, but I was left feeling a little uninterested, after a few ultimately predictable songs. I felt that the singer James was the most redeeming feature of the group and would perhaps see his potential come to fruition in another band.
Echo Deck was up next. The band adopted a more contemporary approach with the use of a drum machine and electronics; however they played a set of distinctly bland songs that are heard time and time again. The band lacked any sense of charisma or vitality, although in fairness, a seasoned rock star would find it difficult to create a vibe in this venue. The stage is hidden in the back corner of the room and live music feels more like an after-thought than a main concern.
The headline slot tonight justifiably went to Secret Circuits. The band was a breath of fresh air, playing their fantastic brand of trance infused indie. The three-piece showcased new material with songs such as 'This Town' making the biggest impact. Their ability to write innovative yet memorable songs is phenomenal. Secret Circuits have just signed to Artificial Bliss Recordings, and based on their performance tonight, 2010 holds great promise for the band.
